Ep 3. The Dance

The Dance is the third episode of the first season of the American sitcom Broke. The series follows a single mom, Jackie, and her son, Sammy, who live a modest life with their dog, Luis, in Reseda, California. Jackie's estranged sister, Elizabeth, and her wealthy husband, Javier, suddenly show up at their doorstep seeking refuge after Javier's father cuts them off financially. The series explores the dynamics between the two families who have vastly different lifestyles and backgrounds.

In this episode, Elizabeth is desperate to impress the members of her new country club and win them over. The country club members are having their annual charity dance event and Elizabeth is eager to show off her skills as a former ballroom dancer. However, she admits to Jackie that she has not danced in years and needs assistance to prepare for the event.

Jackie reluctantly agrees to help, and they start to practice in the living room at home. Sammy and Luis watch in amusement as Elizabeth flubs her steps repeatedly. Elizabeth becomes increasingly frustrated and reveals to Jackie that she feels out of place in her new surroundings and fears that she will never fit in with the other wealthy socialites.

Meanwhile, Javier is trying to connect with Sammy, who is having a hard time adjusting to his new lifestyle. Javier tries to bond with him over video games, but Sammy is uninterested and dismissive. After some thought, Javier realizes that Sammy misses his old life and decides to take him to a local arcade to play his favorite games there. It turns out to be a fun bonding experience for the two, and Sammy realizes that Javier is not as bad as he initially thought.

Back at the house, Elizabeth's dance lessons are not going well, and she begins to doubt her ability to pull off the dance routine at the event. Jackie encourages her and reminds her that she is an excellent dancer who just needs to find her confidence. Elizabeth finally starts to feel more comfortable and confident in her moves, and they continue practicing.

On the night of the charity dance, Elizabeth is decked out in a beautiful gown, and Javier surprises everyone by showing up in a tuxedo. The club members are impressed, but Elizabeth's nerves get the best of her, and she forgets the next steps in the routine. She freezes on the dance floor, but Jackie jumps in and saves the day by leading her through the rest of the performance.

After the dance, the family is sitting on the couch at home, discussing the events of the evening. Elizabeth is disappointed in herself for freezing on the dance floor, but Jackie tells her how proud she is that she persevered and didn't give up. Sammy also tells Javier how much he enjoyed spending time with him at the arcade, and the two agree to do it again sometime.

The episode ends with Javier revealing that he has a surprise for the family. He has rented a beautiful house for them to live in, which he hopes will be their new home. The family is stunned but thrilled at the prospect of living in a beautiful home in a more affluent neighborhood. The episode ends on a high note, with the family excited for their future together.
