In By Whatever Means Necessary: The Times of Godfather of Harlem, viewers are transported back to the 1960s, during the Civil Rights Movement. Season 1 Episode 1, entitled "Mecca," sets the stage for the series by introducing the main character, Bumpy Johnson, and the world he inhabits.

The episode begins with Bumpy returning to Harlem after serving ten years in Alcatraz for drug trafficking. As he steps off the bus, he is greeted by a young girl who welcomes him back and tells him how much his neighborhood has changed. He visits his old friend Mayme, who now runs a numbers racket and understands the importance of keeping her business lowkey. Bumpy also reunites with his former enemy, Vincent "Chin" Gigante, who is trying to take over the crime syndicate in Harlem.

As Bumpy tries to re-establish himself in the criminal world, he also becomes aware of the growing Civil Rights Movement led by Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam. In an emotional scene, Bumpy attends a speech by Malcolm X and is struck by his words and his call for Black empowerment. Malcolm X sees potential in Bumpy and asks him for his assistance in securing a new mosque in Harlem.

Meanwhile, the Italian mob is also trying to expand their influence in Harlem and are willing to use any means necessary. Vincent Gigante sends his men to intimidate Mayme but Bumpy stands up to them and makes it clear that he won't back down. Later, Bumpy is ambushed by the Italians and barely escapes with his life.

The episode ends with Bumpy meeting with Malcolm X, who offers him a deal: he will help Bumpy take down the Italians in exchange for his support of the Nation of Islam's efforts to establish a mosque in Harlem. Bumpy is conflicted but ultimately decides to go along with the plan.

"Mecca" sets up the rest of the series, introducing the major players and their motivations. It also serves as a reminder of the harsh realities of life for Black Americans during this time period, with powerful scenes highlighting the discrimination and violence they faced on a daily basis. By Whatever Means Necessary: The Times of Godfather of Harlem provides an in-depth look at the intersection of crime, politics, and civil rights in 1960s Harlem.
