The Doctor and Romana find themselves stranded in the middle of a void between two different universes. They are on their way back to Gallifrey with K-9 and Adric when they suddenly find themselves in danger. The void is inhabited by the Tharil race, who were once traded and used as slaves. The Tharils are trapped in their own time loop created by the gateway, which leads to a strange and desolate planet known as "The Gateway". The Doctor and Romana want to help the Tharils set themselves free, but they have to do it while avoiding the death traps that surround them on the planet.
The story continues where the previous episode left off, showing the Doctor, Romana, Adric, and K-9 on the mysterious spaceship owned by Biroc - the last of the Tharil. They are making their way to the Gateway, located in an alternate universe and split into two sections, one guarded by a band of humans and another by a group of ape-like creatures known as Gundans. Biroc has plans to set his people free and is leading the Doctor and his companions to the gateway that will take them back to their own universe.
As they approach the Gateway, they are met by a group of Gundans. The three factions involved - the humans, the Gundans, and the Tharils - have all been used and abused in different ways over the centuries by other powerful beings. The Doctor and Romana find that they have been caught in the middle of an ongoing conflict between the three factions, and they must navigate their way through the dangerous and treacherous environment to escape. The stakes are high, and the Doctor and his companions must act quickly before it's too late.
The episode has some great action sequences and the pacing is kept at a brisk pace throughout. The design of the Gundans is particularly impressive, and the episode further explores the concept of interdimensional travel, which was a popular theme in science fiction at the time. The episode is driven by the excellent performances of the cast, particularly Tom Baker and Lalla Ward, who bring their A-game to the show.
The acting is terrific throughout, with Tom Baker as always giving a stellar performance as the Doctor. Lalla Ward as Romana is equally impressive, and the chemistry between the two actors is superb. Adric is played by Matthew Waterhouse, who delivers a nuanced performance, bringing depth to his character and making him more than just a simple sidekick. John Leeson also puts in a great performance as the voice of K-9, adding a fun and quirky element to the proceedings.
The soundtrack for the episode is outstanding, with composer Peter Howell delivering a haunting and evocative score that complements the otherworldly feel of the show. The special effects, while not of the highest quality, are still impressive for the time. The crew uses some inventive techniques to create the visuals, resulting in an overall atmosphere of eerie unease.
Overall, "Warriors' Gate: Part 4" is a solid installment of the long-running sci-fi series and is a must-watch for fans of classic Doctor Who. Despite being the final episode of the season, it is also a standalone episode and can be enjoyed by those new to the series. It features a wealth of excellent acting, an engaging storyline, and some wonderful visuals. The episode has a fitting finale, providing a satisfying conclusion to the season's overarching narrative. Anyone who enjoys classic science fiction will find this episode to be a fantastic addition to their viewing.
