On the planet of Sarn, a humanoid population worships the god Logar, an entity believed to live within a blazing volcano. Meanwhile, an alien race known as the Trion's spaceship has crashed onto the planet. Their captain, Malkon, has been captured by the Sarns and accused of being a spy.
The TARDIS also lands on the planet, and the Doctor and his new companion, Peri, soon find themselves in the middle of a dangerous situation. They are mistaken for Trions and faced with the same accusations as Malkon. The Doctor quickly learns that the Trions are a civilized race who are trying to find a new home planet after theirs was destroyed by a civil war.
As the Doctor and Peri try to help Malkon, they also become entangled in a web of intrigue surrounding the Sarns' beliefs and the true nature of Logar. The Doctor discovers that a group of rogue Trions led by a man named Timanov have been using their advanced technology to manipulate the Sarns into serving their own purposes.
Meanwhile, Peri becomes drawn to a Sarn teenager named Malkon who seeks to question the beliefs of his people and uncover the truth about Logar. The two become unlikely allies in their search for the truth.
As tensions rise between the Trions and the Sarns, it becomes clear that a dangerous confrontation is imminent. The Doctor and his companions must navigate the complex politics of this strange world while trying to prevent a catastrophic showdown that could destroy everyone involved.
