The Awakening: Part 1 is the fifth episode of the twenty-first season of the classic Doctor Who series. The episode originally aired on January 19, 1984, and is a two-part story. The story is set in the fictional English village of Little Hodcombe during the present day.

The story begins with the TARDIS materializing in the center of Little Hodcombe. The Doctor (Peter Davison) and his companions, Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Turlough (Mark Strickson), are surprised to find that it is the year 1984. They had previously visited the village in the 17th century, and were shocked to find that the village had changed so much in such a short period of time.

The villagers are preparing for the reenactment of a civil war battle that took place in the village in the 17th century. The Doctor and his companions are intrigued by the history of the village, and decide to stay and watch the reenactment. The Doctor meets the village's local squire, Sir George Hutchinson (Denys Hawthorne), and his daughter, Jane (Polly James). The Doctor is suspicious of Sir George, and begins to investigate him and the history of the village.

During the reenactment, strange occurrences begin to happen. The villagers start experiencing hallucinations, and the Doctor realizes that something is not right in the village. The Doctor and Turlough witness a group of villagers entering a small church, and they decide to investigate. Inside, they find a hidden room, and the Doctor discovers a strange alien machine that is causing the hallucinations.

The Doctor realizes that the machine is a weapon from a long-forgotten war between two alien races, the Malus and the Seers. The Malus had hidden the machine on Earth, and it had been lying dormant for centuries, until the villagers accidentally activated it during the reenactment.

The Doctor and Turlough attempt to destroy the machine, but are interrupted by the arrival of Sir George, who reveals that he is in league with the Malus. The Malus had promised Sir George power and wealth if he helped them to activate the machine. Sir George reveals that he plans to use the machine to gain power over the village, and eventually the entire country.

The Doctor and Turlough escape from Sir George, and rush back to the TARDIS to get help. However, as they return to the village, they find that it has been transported back in time to the 17th century, and they are now trapped in the midst of the civil war battle. The Doctor realizes that the machine has powerful time-manipulating abilities, and that they must find a way to destroy it before it causes even more damage.

The episode ends on a cliffhanger, with the Doctor and his companions trapped in the 17th century, and Sir George and the Malus on the verge of unleashing their power and taking control of the village. Overall, The Awakening: Part 1 is an intriguing episode that blends science fiction and historical drama. The plot is well-written and fast-paced, and the performances of the cast are excellent.
