Classic Doctor Who Season 26 Episode 101 The Five Doctors

  • November 22, 2013

The episode "The Five Doctors" is a special feature-length installment of the long-running science fiction series, Classic Doctor Who. Originally broadcast in 1983, the episode was created to commemorate the show's twenty-fifth anniversary, and features appearances from all five actors who had portrayed the Doctor up to that point.

The episode begins with the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) and his companion, Romana (Lalla Ward), enjoying some peace and quiet in the picturesque surrounds of the Eye of Orion. However, their rest is soon interrupted when the Doctor is suddenly whisked away by an unknown force.

Meanwhile, in the TARDIS, the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) is attempting to set course for Gallifrey when the same force pulls him out of the time machine. He soon discovers that he is not alone, as he finds himself in the company of his previous selves, the First (William Hartnell), Second (Patrick Troughton), and Third (Jon Pertwee) incarnations of the Doctor.

The group are initially disoriented, unsure of where they are or why they have been brought together. However, it soon becomes clear that they are part of a dangerous game orchestrated by another Time Lord, the villainous Time Lord President Borusa (played by veteran actor Philip Latham). Borusa has summoned the Doctors to Gallifrey in order to make use of their combined expertise and knowledge of the planet. He has a plan for ultimate power, and he is willing to go to any lengths to achieve it.

The Doctors soon find themselves on the run, pursued by various monsters and adversaries from their past adventures. Along the way, they encounter a number of familiar faces, both friend and foe. The feisty Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) and the strong, independent Leela (Louise Jameson) both make an appearance, as does the scheming renegade Time Lord the Master (Anthony Ainley).

As the group journeys through the treacherous landscape of Gallifrey, they are forced to rely on their wits and their skills as Time Lords in order to survive. The different incarnations of the Doctor must work together, combining their unique strengths and personalities to overcome the many obstacles thrown their way.

Despite their differences, the Doctors eventually forge a bond of comradeship, accepting each other's foibles and quirks. They are united in their desire to stop Borusa from achieving his nefarious goal, and are willing to make whatever sacrifices necessary in order to do so.

As the episode reaches its climax, the Doctors face an epic showdown with Borusa and his minions. In a thrilling set piece, the different incarnations of the Doctor combine their strengths, working together to thwart Borusa's plan and save the day.

Overall, "The Five Doctors" is a truly iconic episode of Classic Doctor Who, and a highlight of the series' entire run. The episode succeeds not only in bringing together all five Doctors for the first time, but in depicting them in a way that is both faithful to their individual characterizations and yet true to their shared identity as the Doctor.
