- July 11, 2021
In this episode of Countryfile, the team heads to the Isle of Purbeck, situated in Dorset, on the south coast of England. The Isle of Purbeck is a place of immense natural beauty, and the presenters explore its stunning coastline, rolling hills, and picturesque valleys.
Presenter Matt Baker sets out to sea to explore the rich biodiversity of the English Channel. He joins a team of local fishermen on their boat as they go to catch cuttlefish. Cuttlefish have a unique ability to change colour, and Matt gets to see this up close as the fishermen catch and release these fascinating creatures. He also learns about the challenges of fishing sustainably, in the face of ever-increasing demand for seafood.
Meanwhile, presenter Ellie Harrison explores the inland parts of the island. She visits the picturesque valley of Kimmeridge, where she meets a group of volunteers who are working to restore the area's heathland. Heathlands are a unique type of habitat that support a variety of plant and animal species, including the rare Dartford Warbler. Ellie gets her hands dirty as she helps plant heathland grasses and learns about the importance of these ecosystems.
Elsewhere, presenter John Craven takes a trip to the impressive ruins of Corfe Castle. Corfe Castle has a rich history, having been built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. John learns about the castle's turbulent past, from its use as a royal residence to its destruction during the English Civil War.
Presenter Anita Rani heads to the south of the island to explore the area's agricultural heritage. She meets a farmer who is growing lavender, a crop that is not typically associated with the UK. Lavender has become increasingly popular in recent years, both for its fragrance and its medicinal properties. Anita learns about the challenges of growing this crop, such as dealing with pests and diseases, and discovers how the farm has diversified to make the most of this lucrative crop.
Finally, presenter Tom Heap explores the challenge of managing the area's coastline in the face of climate change. He visits a stretch of coastline that is eroding at an alarming rate and discovers the impact this is having on local communities. Tom meets with scientists who are trying to find ways to slow or even halt the effects of erosion, from planting vegetation to building sea defences.
Throughout the episode, the presenters showcase the Isle of Purbeck's natural beauty, its rich history, and the challenges that face the people who live and work there. From fishing to farming, from ancient ruins to cutting-edge science, this episode of Countryfile has something for everyone.
