Dear White People is a critically acclaimed Netflix series that follows a group of black students attending a predominantly white Ivy League school. The show addresses issues such as racism, classism, and identity politics through a satirical lens. Season 3 Episode 7, titled Chapter VII, is no different.

The episode opens with Sam (played by Logan Browning) venting to Joelle (played by Ashley Blaine Featherson) about the challenges of dating as a black woman. Sam is conflicted about her relationship with Gabe (played by John Patrick Amedori), a white former classmate who she had a previous romantic liaison with. Joelle serves as a sounding board for Sam, offering sound advice and reassuring her that the choice of whom to date is ultimately up to her.

Meanwhile, Lionel (played by DeRon Horton) is navigating his own romantic hurdles. He is working on a story about a gay student who has been ostracized by his fraternity. Lionel quickly realizes that he and the subject of his story, Wesley (played by Sean Cook), share a spark. The two develop an attraction to each other, but Lionel is reluctant to pursue it due to his own shame and lack of self-acceptance. As the episode progresses, Lionel realizes that he cannot deny his feelings any longer and bravely approaches Wesley.

Elsewhere on campus, Coco (played by Antoinette Robertson) and Troy (played by Brandon P. Bell) are dealing with the fallout of their failed campaign for student body president. Coco is approached by a representative from an online beauty company who wants her to be the face of their new campaign. Initially hesitant, Coco sees it as an opportunity to take control of her narrative and accept that her ambitions do not always align with popular opinion.

The episode also delves into the experiences of the supporting characters. Reggie (played by Marque Richardson) struggles with his role in the Black Student Union after a traumatic event from the previous season. Al (played by Jemar Michael), a transfer student, must confront his prejudices against other black people from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Kelsey (played by Nia Jervier) and Muffy (played by Caitlin Carver) explore their own identities and how they are viewed by their peers.

Overall, Chapter VII is a thought-provoking and engaging episode of Dear White People. It seamlessly weaves together various storylines and themes while remaining true to the show's signature style. The performances are nuanced and layered, and the writing is sharp and poignant. The episode addresses important topics such as racism, colorism, and homophobia with sensitivity and thoughtfulness. It is a standout episode in the series and a testament to its continued success.
