  • March 30, 2016

Decoded is a TV series that follows rapper and activist, T.I., as he delves into hot-button topics facing society today. In season 2's episode 23, titled "5 Countries (Besides America) With Race Issues," T.I. and his team explore the struggles and injustices faced by people of color in different parts of the world.

Throughout the episode, T.I. travels to five different countries: Brazil, France, South Africa, Japan, and Australia. Each country presents its own unique race-related issues, which T.I. and his team work to unpack.

In Brazil, T.I. explores the issue of colorism and the hierarchy created by skin color. He speaks with Afro-Brazilians who have been discriminated against due to their darker skin tones, and also sits down with a beauty pageant contestant who has faced backlash for having lighter skin.

In France, T.I. examines the country's controversial secularism laws, which have been used to target Muslim women who wear hijabs. He also speaks with activists who are working to address systemic racism within the country, particularly against Black and North African populations.

In South Africa, T.I. witnesses the ongoing legacy of apartheid and the lingering effects it has had on the black population. He meets with a young girl who has been impacted by the country's education system and hears from activists who are working to bring about change.

In Japan, T.I. tackles the issue of xenophobia, which is directed towards immigrants and non-Japanese people of color. He speaks with residents and activists to better understand why discrimination against foreigners is so widespread in the country.

Lastly, in Australia, T.I. focuses on the country's treatment of its Indigenous population. He visits a community to learn about the trauma and injustices that have been inflicted upon the Aboriginal people, and also speaks with those who are working to change the narrative and bring about justice.

The episode as a whole aims to provide a global perspective on issues of race and discrimination and to show how the struggles faced by marginalized communities are not unique to America. Through his travels, T.I. sheds light on the importance of standing up against injustice regardless of where it is found.
