When Penny is struck down with a cold, her boss, Fireman Sam, knows that it could be dangerous for her to continue working. Pregnant women should take care of themselves more than usual, so he insists that Penny stays at home and rests until she feels better. However, Penny is determined not to sit idly by while her colleagues are out saving lives. Wanting to feel useful, Penny volunteers to man the switchboards instead, which allows her to keep an ear on the various incidents being attended by the rest of the team. But after a while, she starts to feel a little left out.

She misses the excitement and the thrill of the job, and she longs to be involved in the action once again. When a call comes through about a fire at a local farm, Penny decides to take matters into her own hands. Believing the fire to be small and easily extinguishable, she ventures out to the scene on her own, determined to prove to herself and to her colleagues that she's still got what it takes.

But when Penny arrives at the farm, she quickly realizes that the situation is far more serious than she had anticipated. What started out as a small fire has now grown into a blazing inferno, and the farm's two owners are trapped inside their burning barn. Unable to contact her colleagues for backup, Penny realizes that she will have to tackle the fire alone. She quickly springs into action, using her knowledge of fire safety to control the flames and to help the couple to safety.

Meanwhile, back at the station, Sam and the gang are growing increasingly worried about Penny's whereabouts. Unable to reach her on the phone or radio, they fear the worst and set out for the farm themselves. When they arrive, they find Penny and the couple safe and sound; the fire has been extinguished, and the farm has been saved.

Despite Penny's brave actions, Sam is concerned about the risks she took in going to the fire on her own. He reminds her that she should have waited for backup, and that she should never put herself in danger like that again. Penny apologizes and promises to follow safety procedures in the future.

The episode concludes with Penny returning to her switchboard duties, content in the knowledge that she is still a valuable member of the team, even if she can't get involved in the action quite like she used to. As for Sam and the rest of the firefighters, they are grateful for Penny's quick thinking and bravery, and are relieved that she returned home safe and sound.
