In Gentefied season 1 episode 9, titled "Protest Tacos," tensions rise in the Boyle Heights community as the residents protest against a new high-end taco restaurant. The owners of the unnamed restaurant are two non-Latino brothers, who have taken over the space previously occupied by Mama Fina's, a long-standing and beloved local eatery. Ana (Karrie Martin), Yessika (Julissa Calderon), and Erik (J.J. Soria) decide to take action against the newcomers, with Ana leading the charge.
As the episode progresses, we see the trio participate in a peaceful protest outside the restaurant, chanting and holding signs that read "Respect Mama Fina's" and "Buy Boycott." However, things take a turn when protesters from outside the Boyle Heights community show up, looking to make the demonstration more aggressive. This leads to a physical altercation between the outsiders and the Boyle Heights residents, as well as the police being called in to keep the peace.
Meanwhile, Chris (Carlos Santos), Erik's cousin, faces a difficult decision when he learns that his father, a wealthy real estate developer, is behind the new taco restaurant. Chris must choose between loyalty to his family and loyalty to his community.
Throughout the episode, we also see glimpses of Yessika's personal life as she struggles to balance her job as a teacher and her relationship with her boyfriend. Ana, on the other hand, has a heart-to-heart conversation with her father about their relationship and his love for her. Erik, who has been struggling with the closure of Mama Fina's, finally feels a sense of closure after participating in the protest.
Overall, "Protest Tacos" is a powerful and timely episode that tackles issues of gentrification, community activism, and the struggle to balance personal and collective interests. It is a testament to the heart and soul of Boyle Heights and its fight to maintain its identity and culture in the face of change.
