In the seventh episode of season 2 of Ghosts titled The Ghost of Christmas, the festive season comes to Button House and the ghosts are haunted by the memories of their past. The episode starts with Alison trying to decorate the house for Christmas, but the lights keep going out, the tree catches fire, and the ornaments keep breaking. Mike is no help, complaining about the commercialization of Christmas and wanting to spend the day at the pub.
As tensions rise, the ghosts begin to share their own memories of Christmas past. Robin talks about a time when he was a child and his parents forgot him at home on Christmas day. He spent the whole day playing with his toys until they returned, but the experience scarred him for life. Kitty reminisces about the Christmas she first met Thomas, but as the memory unfolds, it takes a more sinister turn. Mary tells the story of the Christmas she spent alone in Button House, before she was joined by her fellow ghosts. It’s a touching moment, reminding the audience that they’re not just spooky specters but complex characters with their own backstories.
Then, things take a turn when the ghost of a young boy appears. He’s not one of the regular Button House ghosts, and no one knows who he is or why he’s there. Alison tries to communicate with him and learns that he’s lost and looking for his family. The ghosts band together to help him, searching the house and the surrounding area for clues to his identity. They eventually discover that he died over a hundred years ago, but his family never knew what happened to him. With the help of the modern-day residents of Button House, they manage to reunite the boy’s ghost with his living descendants.
As the episode comes to a close, the Button House residents sit down to enjoy a Christmas meal together, complete with crackers and bad jokes. There’s a sense of camaraderie and belonging that wasn’t present in the earlier parts of the episode. Even Mike, who started out as a grumpy Scrooge-type character, gets into the spirit of things. It’s a heartwarming end to a touching episode.
The Ghosts series, created by Mathew Baynton and Jim Howick, is a unique blend of comedy and supernatural drama. The show follows the lives of a group of ghosts who haunt an old country house, and the living people who come to inhabit it. The ghosts are a diverse cast of characters, each with their own quirks and personalities. There’s Robin, a cavalier from the 18th century who loves to regale anyone who will listen with his tales of derring-do. There’s Mary, a militant suffragette from the early 20th century, who is staunchly feminist even in death. There’s also Kitty, a flirtatious Edwardian socialite who loves nothing more than a good scandal.
The living characters are just as diverse, ranging from Alison, a struggling musician who inherited the old house from a distant relative, to Mike, her grumpy partner who is constantly at odds with the ghosts. The show explores the relationships between the ghosts and the living characters in a way that is both funny and touching. While there are plenty of supernatural goings-on, at its heart, the show is really about the bonds of friendship and love that can transcend even death.
The Ghosts series 2 episode 7 is a standout episode in an already strong season. It’s heartwarming, funny, and just the right amount of spooky. With an impressive cast of characters and a clever premise, it’s no wonder that the show has quickly become a fan favorite. Whether you’re a fan of comedy, drama, or the supernatural, Ghosts is sure to have something for everyone.
