- 31 Seasons
This popular British soap opera rose quickly to the top of the ratings and has dazzled viewers with intense, exciting daytime drama for the last 30 years. The action centers around the lives of a variety of individuals living in the fictional townhouse, Albert Square, in the East End of London. The story focuses on the idea that the residents of the Square are like a family. Everyone knows everybody and their place in the community. There is always plenty of turmoil, romance and intrigue to keep fans tuning in as they have for decades. The Fowler and Beale families have been there since the beginning but more recently the Mitchell and Branning families have taken center stage. The elderly residents add a great amount of entertainment value to the show with their warm personalities, lively gossip and nostalgic stories. There is more comedy in this soap than you might be used to, with the lively humor of many charming duos like pensioners Dot and Ethel, two of the shows favorite characters. EastEnders has earned respect for its commitment to diversity in many areas including those with disabilities. The program has earned numerous awards such as "Best Soap" at the British Soap Awards and six British Academy of Television awards. The only remaining characters from the first year of the drama are Kathy and Ian Beale and Sharon Watts. Kathy's recent return from the dead raised some eyebrows but, as you know, anything is possible on a good daytime soap.
