  • December 29, 2018

In Family We Trust season 1 episode 2, titled "Blood Legacy," the story continues to focus on the lives of the patriarch of the family, Thong Ek (Kiat-Sing Teo), his son Ekachai (Papangkorn Lerkchaleampote), the daughter-in-law May (Yawwana Mimi Jogkrathok), and Ekachai's three children, Tan (Yonpichai Pattanasopon), Jib (Nutchapan Paramacharenroj), and Cartoon (Sarawut Martthong).

The episode opens with Ekachai and May visiting Thong Ek at his house. They are discussing the issue of Thong Ek's health, as they want him to visit a doctor, and make sure he's okay. Thong Ek, however, is stubborn, and refuses to go to the hospital as he doesn't trust Western medicine. May suggests some alternative medicines, which he also seems to refuse, thus the conversation ends up with an argument.

As the plot progresses, the audience senses an underlying conflict between struggling with modern Westernism and Traditional Easternism. Ekachai manages his family business and tries to balance between his duty to his father's company and his personal life with his family. Meanwhile, Tan, his son, faces bullying in school, and Ekachai's nephew Kobe (Nutnicha Lueanganankhun) is dealing with the aftermath of a breakup with his girlfriend, Fai (Tawan Vihokratana).

The issue intensifies when Ekachai receives a call from the bank, informing him that the company's account has been frozen due to a debt that they owe. This news shocks him, as he had no idea the company was in such financial trouble. Ekachai tries to come up with a solution, but he can't seem to find a way out of this mess.

Meanwhile, Kobe and Fai cross paths once again. Fai seems to be on a date with a new guy, which affects Kobe. Upon realizing his jealousy, Fai confronts Kobe and ends up revealing a truth that puts Kobe in a vulnerable position. That plotline is something that unfolds slowly throughout the episode.

Later on, Thong Ek, who seems to be in distress due to a wound he's been hiding, uncharacteristically invites Ekachai to his room. Ekachai tries to find the reason behind his father's behavior but Thong Ek remains quiet. The scene is emotive and shows a hint of vulnerability in the character of Thong Ek, which was not visible in the first episode.

As the day ends, the final scene is a family gathering with a dinner scene, with conversations in Thai and Chinese. Although the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, it is evident that there are simmering tensions, especially between Ekachai and his father. Here, the show highlights family issues that are universal and relatable, despite their cultural origin.

Overall, In Family We Trust's second episode proceeds to focus on the intricate and complex relationships between family members. It also depicts the tension between East and West, and the evolution of family values, especially in modernizing Asian society. "Blood Legacy" is an emotional and intriguing episode that invites the audience to explore these themes through a well-crafted narrative and compelling performance.
