When I Rise is the fourteenth episode of the second season of the Independent Lens show. It is a documentary that follows the life and experiences of Barbara Smith Conrad, an African-American woman who rose to fame as an opera singer in the 1950s and 1960s.

The episode showcases Barbara's journey from her childhood in Center, Texas, where she grew up as the only black family in her community. Despite the racial segregation and discrimination they faced, Barbara's parents encouraged her to pursue a career in music, and she soon became a standout singer in her school's choir.

Barbara's talent was soon recognized by a music professor at the University of Texas in Austin, who invited her to join the school's opera program. Her talent earned her a leading role in a production of Dido and Aeneas, which brought her to the attention of the famous opera composer, Gian Carlo Menotti. Menotti was impressed by Barbara's performance and invited her to audition for the lead role in his new opera, The Medium.

Barbara was thrilled by the opportunity but was soon devastated when she learned that her role would be given to a white singer instead, due to pressure from the University's Board of Regents. The incident sparked a nationwide controversy, with civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. speaking out in Barbara's defense.

Despite this setback, Barbara refused to give up her dream of becoming an opera singer and continued to hone her skills. She soon found success in Europe, where she performed in concerts and operas to critical acclaim. She eventually returned to the United States, where she continued to perform and teach music.

Throughout the episode, Barbara reflects on her experiences and the lessons she learned from her struggles. She talks about the importance of perseverance, even in the face of adversity, and the need for diversity and inclusivity in the arts.

The episode also features interviews with Barbara's family, friends, and colleagues, who offer their perspectives on her life and accomplishments. There are also clips of her performances, including her rendition of the aria, "Ernani! Ernani, involami," from Verdi's Ernani.

Overall, When I Rise is a moving tribute to a trailblazing artist who overcame racial prejudice and discrimination to achieve her dreams. It is a testimony to the power of perseverance, passion, and talent, and serves as an inspiration to anyone who has faced obstacles in their pursuit of excellence.
