Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman is a Japanese comedy-drama mini-series that tells the story of Kantaro Ametani (played by Matsuya Onoe), a businessman who works in the sales department of a publishing company. However, Kantaro is not interested in his job at all; his real passion lies in finding the best dessert places in Tokyo.
In episode 2, named "Kakigori," Kantaro is on the hunt for the best shaved ice (kakigori) in Tokyo. He decides to visit a café that specializes in kakigori, but he finds out that the café is not open during the day, only at night. Being the determined person he is, Kantaro decides to come back to the café at night, even if it means sacrificing his sleep.
When he finally arrives at the café, Kantaro is amazed by the variety of kakigori that is offered. He decides to try the most expensive one, which comes with three different flavors and toppings. As usual, he is completely lost in the pleasure of eating his dessert, and he describes each taste and texture in great detail. However, things take an unexpected turn when he realizes that he has spent all his money on the kakigori and cannot pay for his train fare back home.
This episode not only showcases Kantaro's love for sweets but also his passion and determination for finding the best dessert places in Tokyo. The audience gets to see his genuine excitement as he tries the different flavors and textures of kakigori, and how he becomes completely consumed in the experience.
Aside from the dessert aspect, the episode also depicts the humorous side of Kantaro's character. His obsession with desserts leads him to make impulsive decisions, such as staying up all night just to try a particular café, and spending all his money on a single dessert. These character traits make Kantaro relatable and endearing to the audience.
Overall, "Kakigori" is a delightful episode that showcases the show's unique blend of comedy, drama, and food appreciation. It offers an entertaining and insightful look into Japanese culture and the passion for desserts that many people share.
