Ep 11. Indian Summer

During an Indian Summer, Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency was in their final push to get the new and modernized self defense rifle to the military. Most of the office was on edge trying to complete it, however, Don Draper, Peggy Olson, and Pete Campbell had other things on their minds.

After the events at the hospital last week, where Peggy and Pete's baby was born, Pete didn't know what to do. He didn't want to be responsible for the child and tried to send her away to be with adoptive parents. Peggy stood up to Pete and said she was going to keep the baby. Fair to say things were slightly awkward between the two of them.

Over at Don's office, he was going to have a weekend getaway with Betty to upstate New York. Betty had been disconnected lately due to their underlying problems in their marriage and Don believed this trip could reconnect them again. Meanwhile, Betty had no such hopes, and was just dreading going on the trip altogether.

Finally, Peggy is tasked with coming up with a new campaign for the Patio soft drink. She brings in her friend who works as an artist in the bohemian scene, who gives them some ideas from her point of view, however her ideas are too risqué and dismisses them.

During the shoot, Peggy runs into Jimmy Barrett, who had previously called her a "tomatoes" during a party where he was performing as a comedian. The experience left Peggy angry and sad not only because of the insult but also because it had been revealed that Jimmy and Don had been doing business with each other and working together on a secret project.

Overall, Mad Men season 1, episode 11 Indian Summer plays out as a set of mini-dramas. The episode shows the complexities of relationships and how the characters struggle with them. It also shows the differences in the time period compared to today which made some of the scenes feel archaic. Nevertheless, the episode works well in further developing the characters and their stories, and sets up for the rest of the season with even more drama to come.
