Watch House of Cards

House of Cards is an American political drama about a U.S. politician who risks his career to make the ascension to the role of Commander-in-Chief. Based on a 1990s BBC series of the same name, the American version of House of Cards is produced exclusively for the video streaming network Netflix.

House of Cards stars Kevin Spacey in his first series work since the mid-1980s. Spacey portrays Congressman Frank Underwood, a Democrat who has the role of Minority Whip in the U.S. House of Representatives. In exchange for the assistance in the most recent presidential election, the incoming Garrett Walker (Michael Gill) promises Underwood the position of Secretary of State in his new administration. However, right before Walker is sworn in, his Chief of Staff Linda Vasquez (Sakina Jaffrey) reneges on the offer and informs Underwood that they will nominate Senator Michael Kern in his place.

Underwood is not happy about this sudden change of plans by President Walker. In fact, he is so furious he decides not only to undermine Kern's nomination, but discredit Walker in the process. He's aided in the process by his environmental activist wife Claire (Robin Wright), who is also ticked off by the underhandedness of the Walker administration after her and her husband put so many hours into the President's campaign.

No one is safe in the path of Underwood's reign of terror. His first target is Representative Peter Russo (Corey Stoll), who is given a second chance by Underwood as long as he plays his way. While Russo reluctantly sides with Underwood in the beginning to derail Kern's nomination to Secretary of State, the representative eventually becomes a pawn in Underwood's plan. He also becomes Underwood's potential downfall after word gets out to investigative reporter Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara) about the Majority Whip's nefarious deeds.

House of Cards was developed by Beau Willimon and produced by Willimon as well as Kevin Spacey, Eric Roth, and John Melfi, among others. Media Rights Capital is the production studio for the program. House of Cards premiered on February 1, 2013 on Netflix.
