Boardwalk Empire is a historical drama television series set in the 1920s prohibition era of Atlantic City, New Jersey. The series stars Steve Buscemi as Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, a corrupt politician and treasurer of Atlantic City who takes advantage of illegal activities such as bootlegging and gambling. The show also stars Michael Pitt as James "Jimmy" Darmody, a former World War I soldier and protege of Nucky. Jimmy becomes involved in the illegal bootlegging business and eventually becomes a rival to Nucky.

Kelly Macdonald plays Margaret Schroeder, an abused housewife who becomes involved with Nucky and eventually becomes his mistress. Another standout performance is Michael Shannon as Nelson Van Alden, an IRS agent who attempts to bring down Nucky and his criminal empire. The show also features Shea Whigham as Nucky's brother, Elias; Anatol Yusef as Nucky's butler, Meyer Lansky; and Gretchen Mol as Gillian Darmody, Jimmy's mother and former prostitute.

As the series progresses, the characters become more complex and the political and criminal landscape of Atlantic City becomes more dangerous. Along with the characters mentioned above, the show features an extensive ensemble cast, including Nick Sandow, Jack Huston, Jeffrey Wright, Bobby Cannavale, Michael K. Williams, Dabney Coleman, Charlie Cox, and many more.

One of the most impressive aspects of Boardwalk Empire is its attention to detail in terms of costume design, music, and historical accuracy. The show's creators, including executive producer Martin Scorsese, aimed to recreate the atmosphere of 1920s Atlantic City as accurately as possible, and it shows in every frame.

Overall, Boardwalk Empire is a gripping and well-crafted television series that explores the dark side of the American dream in a time of great change and upheaval. It's a fascinating look at a period of history that still resonates today, and the performances from the cast are exceptional.
