In Mad Men season 2 episode 2 titled “Flight 1”, we see the staff of Sterling Cooper advertising agency in a state of tumultuous upheaval following the tragic loss of one of their own in a recent plane crash. The entire firm is mourning the loss of Pete’s father who was on the doomed flight. Pete is having a tough time dealing with the loss and is blaming himself for it. He feels guilty for not having spent enough time with his father when he was alive.

Meanwhile, Don's personal life has started to interfere with his professional responsibilities. His mistress, Bobbie Barrett, is in town and is demanding a lot of his time. Don is struggling to balance his two lives, and it seems like his mistress is a ticking time bomb that can go off anytime, jeopardising everything he has built so far. On the other hand, Joan, who is still dealing with her fiancé's departure for Vietnam, is struggling to come to terms with the loss, and she has no one to turn to for comfort. Even Peggy is not able to understand what she is going through.

As if this was not enough, the firm has been hit with another setback. A client, who was about to launch a new product, has suddenly backed out at the last minute, leaving everyone scrambling for a way to make up for the shortfall. Sterling and Cooper are desperate to land a new account to replace the lost revenue, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to get it done.

In the midst of all this, Don has to make one of the most crucial decisions of his life. He has been offered a new job with a rival agency, and he is tempted to take it. Don is considering the offer seriously and is grappling with the idea of starting afresh. The new job looks like an exciting opportunity, and Don cannot resist the possibility of a fresh start.

The episode shows the characters grappling with various emotions, ranging from grief and guilt to ambition and temptation. The title “Flight 1” is a fitting tribute to the tragedy that has befallen the firm. The theme of flight permeates throughout the episode, symbolising the uncertainty of life and the fragility of human existence.

The episode also highlights the changing social landscape of the 1960s and its impact on the characters. Don’s extramarital affair with Bobbie is a reflection of the changing attitudes towards sexuality, and how it has become more acceptable to openly indulge in such behaviour. Similarly, Joan’s struggles with her fiancé going off to war underscore the impact of the Vietnam War on the lives of Americans.

As always, the show is beautifully shot with an attention to detail that transports the viewer back to the 1960s. The costumes, the sets, the music, and the language are all spot-on, creating a thoroughly immersive experience.

Overall, Mad Men season 2 episode 2 is a compelling and emotional episode that delves deep into the lives of its characters and shows how their personal struggles can have a profound impact on their professional lives. It is a masterful piece of storytelling that keeps the viewer engaged from beginning to end.
