Ep 1. Free at Last

In the season 2 premiere of Narcos titled "Free At Last," the aftermath of Pablo Escobar's escape from La Catedral continues to be felt by the Colombian government and the DEA. The episode opens with footage of real-life news clips reporting on the events of July 22nd, 1992, when the most wanted man in Colombia was able to evade law enforcement by simply walking out of his gated prison.

From there, we are taken to a meeting between Colombian officials, including President Gaviria and his advisors. They are discussing the best course of action now that Escobar is on the loose, and they recognize that they have a public relations nightmare on their hands. They debate whether or not to pay $600 million in restitution to the victims of Escobar and his cartel, as the drug lord has demanded in exchange for turning himself in.

Meanwhile, Javier Peña of the DEA is struggling with the fallout of Escobar's escape. He is convinced that Pablo will go back to his old ways and continue to wreak havoc on Colombia. He wants to arrest the drug lord, but he knows that the Colombian government is hesitant to take aggressive action.

As we learn later in the episode, Peña's instincts were right. Escobar wastes no time in ordering a hit on Rodrigo Lara, a former justice minister who threatened to extradite him to the United States. Good guys and bad guys alike worry as this attack will increase the violence of Colombia, will the life of Colombian citizens be safe again?

In addition to the political and law enforcement drama, we also see the personal side of Escobar's life. He is reunited with his wife Tata and their children, and we see the difficulty of maintaining his underground operation while also keeping his family safe. The scenes between Escobar and Tata are particularly fascinating, as we see a softer, more vulnerable side of the feared drug lord.

Overall, "Free at Last" sets the stage for another thrilling season of Narcos. The show continues to excel in its ability to blend historical accuracy with great storytelling, and this episode is no exception.
