At the center of the show is Jax, a rebellious 19-year-old who has cycled in and out of juvenile detention since he was 12. After another arrest, the judge orders Jax to complete 200 hours of community service. He's assigned to a city clean-up crew with other young offenders. Jax bristles at the structure and lectures from crew supervisor Rico, an ex-gang member now dedicated to helping at-risk teens. However, Jax starts to reconsider his attitude when he befriends some of the other crew members.

There's Violet, a gifted artist whose low self-esteem leads her to date abusive guys. She's completing service hours for shoplifting art supplies. Book-smart Curt landed community service for hacking school computers to change his grades. And former high school football star Troy is doing service after succumbing to peer pressure and vandalizing a rival school.

As the crew works together to clean up graffiti and litter around the city, they open up to each other about their dreams, regrets, and hopes for the future. Jax realizes he's found a chosen family among this group of fellow outsiders. However, obstacles remain as some crew members struggle with addictions and continued legal troubles threaten to break up the new bonds they've formed.

Throughout the first season, the crew faces challenges from Rico, who believes in tough love, and James, a ruthless police officer determined to catch the kids violating their probation. There are rivalries with other community service crews, including a dangerous group of white supremacists completing service hours. But the Bandits, as the crew calls themselves, stick together through it all.
