Ep 3. Your Body During Adolescence

In Sex Education season 1 episode 3, named Your Body During Adolescence, Otis and Maeve team up to assist Aimee Gibbs, their classmate, with her sexual education. Aimee is a young lady experiencing early adolescent developments, and she is struggling with coping with the changes taking place in her body. The episode opens with Aimee experiencing one of the most common adolescent challenges, a period. Not only is she unsure of what is happening, but she is incapable of seeking assistance from her mother who is not present in her life.

She turns to Maeve for help, but, as Maeve explains, she can't be there for all of them. Aimee's humiliation climbs when someone takes a video of her and posts it on social media. As the episode unfolds, various other adolescent issues are addressed. There is hope, bravery, friendship, and health. These themes play out through multiple storylines that intertwine as the episodes progress.

Aimee lives as an everywoman, and the problem is relatable and realistic. It's both funny and troubling, as it reveals the effects of social media on young people and the profound impact it can have on self-esteem. Furthermore, the episode also manages the delicate task of marrying humor with empathy without trivializing the problems Aimee is facing.

Otis also has his own subplot to contend with. His dad has started dating, which is alarming him because he doesn't want his father to either replace his absent mother or be happy without her being in the picture. He has muddled feelings about sex, which he starts exploring with his girlfriend. When they try to have sex, Otis panics and pulls out--then he can't get it up again. This ordeal emphasizes the importance of patience in relationships, but at the same time, it acknowledges the fact that sexual encounters don't always go as planned.

Meanwhile, Maeve is dealing with her mother's heroin addiction. Maeve is an independent young woman who, as the series has revealed, hasn't always been dealt a fair hand. In this episode, she continues to work in the adult industry to make ends meet. As if that wasn't sufficient, her mother tries to reconnect with her when she's at work. Maeve is both sturdy and vulnerable, with a strong desire to protect herself from being hurt again while hoping that her mother will make the right choices.

Adam Groff, the school bully, also has a part to perform in episode three. After unsuccessfully attempting to have sex with Aimee at the beginning of the show, Adam's in security bubbled over, causing him to lash out violently on Eric, Otis's best friend. He pushes Eric to the ground, which creates a minor break to his arm.

Sex Education is a show that creates characters which young adults will relate to. It shows them that all adolescents deal with difficulties, and they are not alone. Furthermore, it reminds them that these problems are typical and that it's essential to talk about them. This episode is entertaining, but it's also relevant and educational. It is worth seeing, and it provides an excellent opportunity for parents and their kids to watch together and initiate conversations about this subject matter. Given teens' tenderness and impressionability, it should preferably be viewed with an adult's guidance.
