In the seventh episode of Sex Education's first season, the students of Moordale Secondary School are gearing up for their annual school dance. Otis, the adolescent sex therapist protagonist, is seen preparing for this event by ironing his shirt and fixing his hair in front of the mirror. He's joined by his friend Eric, who amusingly asks if he's "preparing for the royal wedding."
Otis has been struggling to deal with the fallout from recent events and their impact on his relationship with his mother, Jean. He's struggling to come to terms with the fact that his mother has resumed her sexual relationship with his former colleague and sex clinic partner, Jakob. The fact that Jean has been lying to him about it creates a tense and awkward dynamic between the two, even as Jean tries to reach out and bridge the gap between them.
Meanwhile, Maeve and Otis have drifted apart in the aftermath of their recent fallout, but the school dance presents a chance for them to reconnect. The problem is that Maeve is currently seeing someone else – her brother's best friend, Jackson. Their new relationship is a relatively new development, and it's clear that Maeve is still uncertain about what she wants from it.
Other students at Moordale are also grappling with various issues and emotions leading up to the dance. Eric, who is openly gay and has been vocal about it despite growing up in a conservative environment, is determined to make a statement with his outfit. He's proud of his sexuality and wants to demonstrate that he's most comfortable in his own skin. His father, however, is uncomfortable with Eric's choices and tells him to change into more "traditional" clothes. This causes a rift between the two, and Eric starts to feel like he's being forced to hide a part of himself. This conflict brings to the fore the challenge that parents with conservative values can face in understanding and accepting their children's choices.
Another character with a subplot in this episode is Aimee, who is struggling with body image issues. She's concerned over how she'll appear in front of her peers, and her negative thoughts about her body lead to obsessive behavior as she tries different diets and fitness routines to lose weight. This storyline highlights the effects of societal pressure on young people, particularly on young women, and how difficult it can be to build a positive body image.
The school dance itself is filled with drama, as expected. Characters from both Otis and Maeve's lives use the event to act on their feelings, leading to unexpected surprises. The prom is also where characters confront their personal demons: Eric’s conservative father, Aimee's body image issues, and Otis's crumbling relationship with Jean.
Overall, episode seven of Sex Education is a tense, introspective and evolving mix of personal tales. It touches on sensitive and topical subjects related to adolescence and growing up, including sexuality, body image issues, family drama, and identity crises. It also reminds us of the fact that even in the midst of adolescent chaos, it is possible to find some sense of stability and solace.
