In the premiere of The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret, viewers are introduced to the titular character, Todd Margaret, portrayed by David Cross. The episode, titled "In Which Claims are Made and a Journey Ensues," begins with Todd receiving a promotion at his job in a disposable cup company, which requires him to relocate to London. Todd is eager to impress his boss, Brent Wilts, played by Will Arnett, and eager to show he's up for the task at hand.
Todd arrives in London already struggling to navigate a foreign city and adjusting to the time difference. His first order of business should be to meet with his new boss. However, before departing the airport, Todd meets Dave, portrayed by Blake Harrison, a fellow passenger who mistakes Todd for a philanthropist. Dave explains his own charity, Clappy the Clown Foundation, and asks Todd for a donation. Todd, desperate to impress, tells Dave he will donate $2500. To make matters worse, Todd's luggage is lost, so he is unable to change out of his wrinkled, ill-fitting suit.
Things continue to go wrong for Todd at the office, where he struggles to adjust to the company's technical jargon and office culture. Against his better judgment, Todd lies in a meeting with Brent, claiming to have experience in the coffee industry, which is quickly uncovered as a falsehood. Brent puts Todd in charge of organizing a meeting with a coffee distributor, but Todd is unable to secure the meeting, as he has no credentials or contacts in the coffee industry.
To make matters worse, Todd is groped by a stranger, is nearly arrested for urinating in public, and gets involved in an accident while driving a rental car. All of these incidents are made worse by Todd's incessant lying and attempts to cover up his mistakes, which only seem to get him deeper into trouble.
As the episode progresses, Todd begins to realize the extent of the mess he has made and attempts to make things right. He tries to make a donation to Dave's charity but is unable to come up with the funds. He also tries to secure the coffee meeting by contacting a fake contact he has made up, but his plan falls apart when Brent takes the phone away and speaks to the non-existent contact directly.
By the end of the episode, Todd is at his wit's end. He has lied, bargained, and begged himself into a corner with seemingly no way out. He is even mistakenly arrested by the police in a case of mistaken identity. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as Todd's true identity is called into question, leaving viewers wondering how he will get out of this mess.
Overall, the first episode of The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret is a hilarious and cringe-worthy start to the series. David Cross brings an awkward charm to the role of Todd, and the supporting cast, including Will Arnett and Blake Harrison, are equally entertaining. The show's blend of dry humor and physical comedy keeps the episode engaging from start to finish, and the plot takes unexpected turns at every corner. Fans of cringe comedy and dry humor are sure to enjoy this promising debut.
