The Larry Sanders Show Starring Garry Shandling Season 4 Episode 3 Arthur After Hours
- TVMA
- August 2, 1995
As the title implies, "Arthur After Hours" revolves around Hank's assistant, Arthur, and his attempts to get a job as a comedy writer. The catch is that Arthur is an elderly man who has never written a comedy script before, and he's up against stiff competition in the form of the show's other writers.
Throughout the episode, Arthur tries his best to impress Hank and the other writers with his ideas, but they all fall flat. Meanwhile, Larry is dealing with his own problems, as he becomes obsessed with a book about male menopause and starts to worry that he's losing his edge.
As the night goes on, Arthur gets more and more frustrated with his inability to come up with anything good. He starts to suspect that the other writers are deliberately sabotaging him, and begins to act out in increasingly bizarre ways. At one point, he even starts quoting Shakespeare and pretending to be a bartender, much to Hank's confusion.
Eventually, Larry offers to help Arthur with his script, and the two men start working together in Larry's office. But when Larry falls asleep at his desk, Arthur sneaks out and continues working on his own. He ends up coming up with what he thinks is a brilliant idea for a sketch, but when he presents it to the other writers the next day, they all hate it.
In the end, Arthur is forced to accept that he's just not cut out for comedy writing. He decides to go back to being Hank's assistant, and the two men share a touching moment in which they both express their appreciation for one another. Despite all the craziness that went on during the night, the episode ends on a sweet and sentimental note.
