Jonathan Pine, a former British soldier who now works as a night manager at a luxurious hotel in Cairo, is confronted with an opportunity to help an arms dealer, Richard Onslow Roper, who is staying at the hotel, tampering with his documents on behalf of his mistress, Sophie Alekan, who is intent on getting revenge from her boyfriend, Freddie Hamid, who had been brutalized by Roper's men.

After a night of passion with Sophie, who had left her boyfriend's house to get revenge, Jonathan learns of a private jet that is about to take off from the hotel's airport with Onslow Roper, his entourage, and his arms shipment. He relays this information to a friend in the British embassy who promises to inform the authorities, but to no avail.
