Elizabeth Harmon, the young orphaned chess prodigy, struggles to maintain her sobriety as she heads into the final stretch of the Mexico City Invitational. As her performance wavers, she faces intense pressure from both her opponents and the media.
Elizabeth's overconfidence leads to a series of mistakes in her matches, causing her to spiral into a dangerous cycle of self-doubt and substance abuse. Unable to break her losing streak, Elizabeth desperately seeks out advice from the one person she trusts most: her former mentor, Mr. Shaibel.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth's adoptive mother, Alma, continues to grapple with her own addiction issues while grappling with the reality of her crumbling marriage. When a chance encounter with a Russian chess player leads to a surprising revelation, Alma's world is turned upside down once again.
As the tournament draws to a close, Elizabeth must confront her inner demons and find a way to regain her confidence before it's too late. Will she be able to overcome her personal struggles and emerge victorious, or will her addiction and self-doubt consume her?
