Roots is a miniseries made for American television that traces the life of a West African warrior named Kunta Kinte. This drama series delves into the intricacies that faced native peoples and the European forces that colonized the area. Kinta is a Mandinka, and each episode tells his own story, as well as that of his family's legacy as they try to face and rebel against local authorities. Local families often faced off against each other in order to gain favor with the colonizing authorities, but this meant that many, like Kunta Kinte ended up being sold and traded as property.
