Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 American fantasy film that tells the story of a young prince who is turned into a hideous beast since he fails to care about anybody but himself. However, to turn himself back into the prince he once was, he has to be taught a lesson and earn the love of a woman and be loved in return. The story begins when an enchantress who makes herself look like a beggar offers the young prince a rose in hopes of getting shelter for the night, but he refuses and she gives him his punishment for being selfish. She gives him a magic mirror that makes him capable to see future events and tells him that the rose she has given him previously will bloom until his twenty first birthday. This date is important because he must learn his lesson truthfully before all the rose's petals have fallen off or else he will be a beast for all eternity.

Years later, a young woman named Belle moves into a nearby French village with her father. Belle is a girl full of wonder who longs for a life outside her boring village. Also, her beauty and down to earthness makes her the fascination of many man, but mostly the arrogant local hunter, Gaston. Belle does not see anything in Gaston and wishes to be left alone.

As Belle's father travels away to a fair, he gets lost and is chased by menacing wolves that lead him stumbling upon the Beast's castle. At the castle, he meets the servants that the enchantress transformed into household objects as another way of punishing the prince. The Beast makes her father a prisoner, but Belle is led to the castle by her farther's horse and sacrifices herself to take her father's place. The Beast agrees and leaves Gaston rethinking about what to do since Belle's father has returned and told their unbelievable story.

Back at the castle, the Beast orders Belle to dine with him, but she refuses his command. One of the Beast's transformed servants gives her a tour of the castle, and she finds the rose that has the power to seal the Beast's fate. Angry at her discovery, the Beast chases her away and causes her to attempt to run away. Sadly, she and the horse are chased by wolves and the Beast actually comes to her rescue. Belle takes care of him and tends to his wounds, and this event makes him able develop true feelings for her. The Beast becomes more friendly to Belle and in return they spend more time together developing their relationship.

Meanwhile, Gaston tries to bargain with the the warden of the town's insane asylum to have Belle's father placed there unless Belle consents to Gaston's marriage proposal.

At the castle, Belle and the Beast share a romantic date together and Belle admits to the Beast that she misses her father. In return, he lets her use the magic mirror to see him. Horrified, Belle sees her father dying in the woods as a failed attempt to rescue her. The Beast lets her leave to rescue her father and lets her have the mirror to remember him by. As a sad Beast watches Belle leave, he reveals that he has fallen in love with Belle.

Belle magically finds her father and takes him home, but Gaston arrives to carry out his plan. His plan backfires when Belle proves her father not to be mental by revealing the Beast with the magic mirror. Gaston comes to realize that Belle has feelings for the Beast and he gets the village angry against the Beast by telling persuading them that the Beast is a monster that must be slain. He leads them to the castle and leaves Belle and her father in the basement. However, a servant hid himself in Belle's luggage and uses one of her father's inventions to set them free.

The servants and Gaston's angry mob fight in the castle, which leaves Gaston with the opportunity to hunt down the Beast. The Beast is first weakened by depression to fight back, but becomes stronger when he sees Belle returning to the castle with her father. The Beast wins the battle between him and Gaston, and spares Gaston's life in a request that he stay away forever. However, the Beast isn't so lucky when Gaston unexpectedly stabs the Beast. This event leaves Gaston falling to his death even though he has already injured the Beast.

Belle reveals her love for the Beast to him just as the last rose petal begins to fall and the Beast comes back to life as his human self. As he and Belle kiss, the castle and everything in it return to the way they were before the spell had been placed on the Beast. Belle and the Beast dance the night away with his servants and her father watching happily from the sidelines as their romance is forever.

Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 romance movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 24 minutes. It has received outstanding reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 8.0 and a MetaScore of 95.
