Through a series of strange events, T.J. ends up meeting Hesher who decides to involve himself in T.J.'s family's lives. He does a few malicious deeds for which T.J. ends up getting blamed. T.J. has a nemesis at school who picks on him a lot. Hesher takes it upon himself to destroy the bullies car by lighting it on fire one night while T.J. is with him. Instead of giving T.J. a ride home when the bully comes outside, Hesher leaves him to fend for himself. This happens quite frequently when T.J. spends time with Hesher.
Hesher also moves into the families garage and spends a lot of time with the grandmother. He joins the family for meals where he often talks about lewd and disgusting acts he has performed with women. Despite his odd behavior, the grandmother takes a liking to him. Hesher is not the only unpleasant person T.J. has to deal with in his family. His father has been depressed ever since his mother died and does not even bother to get dressed for the day. T.J. feels as though he has been abandoned by both his parents. There is a happy ending to the story even though the grandmother dies.
