Adam has a somewhat overprotective mother who is also taking care of his father, who suffers from Alzheimer's. She is concerned about her son's welfare although he assures her he is fine. Adam has a pleasant, often humorous side, which his friend Kyle uses in an effort to meet girls. The pair decide they can use Adam's cancer as a way to gain sympathy from young women who would otherwise not go out with them. Adam also starts chemotherapy, where he meets a few older men who are also receiving treatment. As the weeks pass by, the men form a friendship through their shared bond of cancer.
Adam continues to see his therapist, whom he often gives advice to on how to handle patients. In an effort to sympathize with her patients, she often reaches out and touches him on the arm. He tells her it is an annoying gesture because it does not carry any real emotion. As the story evolves, the different personalities of the characters emerge. Kyle takes a more serious approach to handling cancer by reading books about it. He eventually gets upset with Adam for not taking his illness as seriously as he should.
