In An American Pickle, Seth Rogen plays a man named Herschel Greenbaum who immigrates to America from his shtetl in Eastern Europe in the early 1900s. Upon arriving in New York City, he gets a job at a pickle factory, falls in love with a woman named Sarah, and starts a family. One day, while working at the factory, Herschel falls into a vat of pickles and is brined for 100 years. When he wakes up, he discovers that he's the last surviving member of his family and that the world has changed in ways he could never have imagined. He's taken in by his only living relative, a great-grandson named Ben, who is also played by Seth Rogen.

Ben is a struggling app developer who is working on a startup called "Boop Bop." He lives alone in Brooklyn and has no real connections to his family or heritage. When Herschel reappears after 100 years, Ben is hesitant to embrace him, but ultimately decides to help him adjust to modern life.

The movie is essentially a fish-out-of-water story, with Herschel trying to navigate the modern world and Ben trying to figure out how to relate to his great-grandfather. There are a lot of jokes about the differences between the early 1900s and today, as well as some skewering of modern culture and technology.

One of the most interesting things about the movie is that it's essentially a two-hander, with Rogen playing both Herschel and Ben. The two characters have distinct personalities and voices, and Rogen does a remarkable job of bringing them both to life. Sarah Snook plays a small but pivotal role as Sarah, Herschel's wife from the early 1900s. She's a warm and loving presence in the movie, even in her limited screen time.

Aside from the humor and the performances, the movie also has a lot of heart. It's ultimately a story about family, heritage, and the ways in which we connect to our past. Herschel has a deep love for his family and his culture, even as he struggles to come to terms with how much the world has changed. Ben, on the other hand, has distanced himself from his family and his roots, but begins to reconnect with them through his relationship with Herschel.

Overall, An American Pickle is a charming and entertaining movie that offers a unique twist on the classic fish-out-of-water story. It's funny, heartfelt, and features a standout performance from Seth Rogen. Whether you're a fan of his movies or not, this one is definitely worth checking out.

An American Pickle is a 2020 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.7 and a MetaScore of 58.
