Problem Solving: Distances is a 2013 drama film directed by Marcio Garcia. The movie tells the story of four old friends who reunite after twenty years to resolve some of their longstanding issues, and deal with the changes and struggles that have happened in their lives since then. The film follows Gabriel (João Miguel), who is both the protagonist and the narrator. Gabriel is a successful mathematician who lives in London, but he travels to Brazil to attend the wedding of an old friend. The marriage marks a reunion between Gabriel and his three old friends: Luana (Mariana Ximenes), an actress; Rafael (Sergio Guizé), a musician; and Felipe (Michel Noer), a business owner.

The four friends soon realize that although they are physically close, they are emotionally distant. They come from different backgrounds, had different priorities in life, and achieved different levels of success. Gabriel's narrations describe the idea that their different lives have put them on different paths in life, and that they now need to work to reconcile these differences.

The centerpiece of the film is a long hiking trip that the group takes to a remote cabin in the mountains. During the hike, old wounds resurface, and fresh ones are created. Each character has to confront their own fears, insecurities, and personal demons.

The film is visually stunning; portraying the natural beauty of Brazil's countryside, with lush forests, jagged mountains, and winding rivers. The landscape serves as both a symbol of the vast distance that exists between the friends, and a metaphor for the journey of self-discovery that they must undertake.

The cinematography is supported by a beautiful soundtrack, filled with Brazilian music that provides an additional layer of emotional depth to the story. The film's musical score was composed by Marco Beltrami.

As the hike continues, the group's conflicts become more intense and highlight their personal struggles with relationships and career choices. A subplot involves Gabriel's struggle with alcoholism, and the role that his friends had played in his past addiction. The film is a thought-provoking examination of the power of friendship, the consequences of choices, and the courage necessary to face one's own past.

The performances by the actors are all excellent, and their chemistry is believable. The outstanding acting is further strengthened by the crisp and sharp dialogue, which creates a feeling of intimacy between the characters.

Overall, Problem Solving: Distances is a well-crafted and engaging film that provides a window into the complexities of human relationships. The movie invites the viewers to reflect on their own lives and choices, and to consider the importance of the relationships we form. Through the character's struggles and ultimate reconciliation, the film showcases the power of forgiveness, hope, and the healing that comes with the passage of time.
