Released in 1997 Wishmaster is a movie directed by Robert Kurtzman with Wes Kraven of as its executive producer. It featured actors from various other horror franchises including Robert Englund. The plot concerns an ancient djinn, a genie like demon, who wishes to open a portal to allow his kind to inhabit the earth. This ordinarily happens after the djinn grants three wishes but his plan is foiled in ancient times, setting up the events in the movie.
In modern times the djinn is released from his prison within the opal he was sealed within by a woman named Alexandra Amberson when examining it. The rest of the movie concerns the djinn's efforts to claim Alexandra's soul and complete the gateway that will allow the other djinn to manifest on earth.
Despite receiving negative reviews the movie was financially successful, exceeding its $5 million budget very quickly. During its opening weekend it ranked third at the box office. However due to the poor reception overall the three sequels it spawned were direct to video.
