A Royal Night Out is a charming movie set in London in the year 1945. It tells the story of Princesses Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) and Margaret (Bel Powley), who are granted permission by their parents, King George VI (Rupert Everett) and Queen Elizabeth (Emily Watson), to attend the VE Day celebrations in the city. It is Princess Elizabeth's first major public appearance, and the two young royals are excited to be a part of the festivities.

The movie starts with a beautiful opening sequence that sets the tone for what is to come. We see the two princesses getting ready for the big day and their excitement is palpable. They are dressed in their best clothes, looking every bit the royals that they are. We also get glimpses of the celebrations taking place in the city, with people dancing on the streets, singing, and generally having a great time.

Once the princesses arrive at the party, they quickly get separated from their royal escorts and find themselves lost in the crowds. Princess Margaret, who is always the rebel, gets into a bit of a scrape with a young soldier, Jack (Jack Reynor), who is on leave from the army. Meanwhile, Elizabeth meets Jack's friend, a handsome airman named Pryce (Callum Turner), and the two hit it off.

As the night progresses, the princesses find themselves on a wild adventure through the streets of London. They encounter all sorts of characters, from drunken soldiers to friendly civilians who offer them a ride home. They also witness firsthand the devastation of war, with bombed-out buildings and broken families.

Throughout the movie, we see Princess Elizabeth struggling with her royal duties and her desire to live a more normal life. She is torn between the responsibilities that come with being the future queen and the desire to break free from the constraints of her role. The movie does a great job of showing the different sides to her personality, from the regal and formal to the carefree and adventurous.

Bel Powley's portrayal of Princess Margaret is spot-on. She is the rebellious younger sister, always pushing the boundaries and eager to experience everything life has to offer. Her scenes with Jack are some of the movie's most memorable, as they dance and drink in a pub, and even take a ride on a carnival ride.

The supporting cast is excellent, with great performances from Rupert Everett as King George VI and Emily Watson as Queen Elizabeth. Everett brings a gravitas to the role, showing the struggles of a man who never wanted to be king but was forced into the role. Watson is perfect as the strong and supportive Queen, who is always there for her daughters, even when they get into trouble.

The film is beautifully shot, with stunning scenes of London at night, from the bright lights of Piccadilly Circus to the dark alleys of Soho. The period details are also impeccable, with the costumes and set design transporting the audience back to the 1940s.

Overall, A Royal Night Out is a delightful movie that captures the spirit of post-war Britain. It's a fun and adventurous romp through the streets of London, with great performances and plenty of heart. It's a perfect movie for fans of romantic comedies and period dramas, and anyone who loves a good fairytale.

A Royal Night Out is a 2015 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 37 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.5 and a MetaScore of 58.
