The story begins with a man named Rajesh (Dilip Kumar) who is a successful business tycoon in the city. He lives with his wife Parvati (Waheeda Rehman) and their son in a luxurious house. Rajesh is a very busy man and hardly has any time to spend with his family. His son complains about this and tells him that he wants to spend more time with him, but Rajesh brushes him off, stating that he is busy earning money to provide for the family.

One day, Rajesh's life takes a turn when he is falsely accused of a crime he did not commit. He is thrown into jail, and his family is left devastated.
