Across the Pacific is a 1942 American espionage thriller film directed by John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, and Sydney Greenstreet. Set during World War II, the film follows the adventures of Rick Leland, an American intelligence agent who poses as a Nazi sympathizer to get close to some Japanese agents in Panama. The story starts with Leland (Bogart) being kicked out of the military for making some questionable decisions in China. He is now stuck in Panama with no job, no money, and no prospects. But when he meets Alberta Marlow (Astor), a beautiful woman who claims to be living in the same hotel as him for the same reason, Leland's luck seems to turn around. Marlow introduces him to an acquaintance of hers, Doctor Lorenz (Greenstreet), who offers him a job as a spy.

Lorenz tells Leland that he wants him to pretend to be a Nazi sympathizer in order to get information from some Japanese agents who are also staying in Panama. Leland agrees to the plan and begins to gather intel. However, things quickly become complicated when Leland starts to fall for Marlow.

As the mission progresses, Leland realizes that there is more at stake than just gathering intelligence. He becomes embroiled in a web of deceit, double-crosses, and danger, as he tries to outmaneuver both the Japanese and the Nazis.

The film's tension builds as Leland uncovers more and more about the Japanese plan and the true motives of Lorenz. The climax of the film takes place on a ship bound for Tokyo, where Leland must use all of his wits to save himself, his love interest Marlow, and the passengers on board.

Humphrey Bogart gives a strong performance as the lead, playing his character as a strong, resourceful, and intelligent agent who is capable of improvising under pressure. Mary Astor is convincing as Marlow, bringing both vulnerability and strength to her character. Sydney Greenstreet is, as always, excellent in his role as Lorenz, bringing his signature charm and menace to the character.

The film is notable for its realistic portrayal of wartime espionage, with Huston and his team carefully researching and recreating details of the era, from the look of the uniforms to the language spoken by the characters.

Across the Pacific is a well-crafted espionage thriller that offers a peek into the world of wartime intrigue. With a strong cast, smart writing, and expert direction, the film is an engaging and entertaining watch that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats until the final credits roll.

Across the Pacific is a 1942 adventure movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 37 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.8.
