Main character, Mona Gray, becomes very withdrawn and introverted after her father suffers from a mysterious illness which leaves him incapacitated. Mona's mother forces her to move out on her own and Mona turns towards her love of math to secure a teaching job at a local elementary school. Mona Gray discovers her purpose as a teacher and becomes interested in helping one of her students who has a mother that is dying from cancer. Gray struggles with her inner demons throughout the film but ultimately becomes the ideal teacher and also finds love with another fellow teacher.
