Dr. Abner Perry is a Victorian scientist who is partnered with a rich American businessman named David Innes. The two men are in Wales testing out an advanced new drilling machine called the Iron Mole which turns out to be far more powerful than they anticipated. The machine drills down to the the Earth's core where they discover a massive system of underground caves ruled over by a strange species of telepathic flying lizard creatures. To their horror the men also find that these creatures have used their mental abilities to enslave and mind control a race of primitive humans.
