Benched is a heartwarming sports drama movie from the year 2018. Directed by Robert Deaton and George Flanigen, the movie centers around a high school baseball coach named Coach John Hand (played by John C. McGinley) who has to go through an emotional and physical journey to rediscover his love for the game. The movie starts with Coach Hand getting fired from his job after it is discovered that he was using steroids to enhance his performance. Devastated by the sudden turn of events, Coach Hand retreats from his family and friends and isolates himself in his house. However, his life takes a new turn when his former assistant coach, Wade (Garret Dillahunt) drops by to check on him.

Wade informs Coach Hand that he has taken over the high school baseball team and invites him to help him coach the team. Initially reluctant, Coach Hand eventually agrees to help Wade and the two set out to train the team. However, Coach Hand's presence on the field causes a rift between the players and the parents, who are still angry at him for using steroids.

The movie impressively portrays the struggles of a fallen hero who is trying to redeem himself. His character is multi-layered and John C. McGinley does an excellent job of depicting Coach Hand's pain and isolation. The audience is taken on a journey of self-discovery, as the coach tries to reconcile with his past, reconnect with his family, and find redemption through coaching.

The movie is not just a story of redemption but also highlights the importance of team unity, leadership, and sportsmanship. Coach Hand's methods are unorthodox and sometimes questionable, but it is his deep understanding of the game that shines through. He is passionate, dedicated, and has a genuine love for the sport, which inspires his team to give their best.

The cast is rounded out with exceptional performances from Garret Dillahunt and Darius Willis. Garret Dillahunt is believable as a young assistant coach who is trying to fill the shoes of his mentor. He provides a much-needed balance to Coach Hand's abrasive personality and is the voice of reason in the team. Darius Willis, who plays one of the team's star players, delivers a raw performance that makes the audience empathize with his character.

The movie is perfectly paced and keeps the audience engaged from start to finish. The baseball games are shot with great attention to detail and the cinematography is impressive. The soundtrack, featuring songs by Old Dominion and G-Eazy, is perfect for the movie's themes and complements the on-screen action well.

Overall, Benched is a well-crafted sports drama that tugs at the heartstrings. It is a story of redemption, leadership, and sportsmanship, with excellent performances from the cast. The movie is a must-watch for fans of sports dramas and those who appreciate a good underdog story.
