Directed by Courtney Cox, Lifetime's Talhotblond is based on the true life events of an internet love triangle that resulted in 47-year old and married Thomas Montgomery pleading guilty to the murder of his co-worker and friend, 22-year old Brian Barrett over a shared internet love interest. The movie begins with the murder, and then takes the viewer back two years prior to the crime. Thomas Montgomery (Garret Dillahunt) is in his 40’s, married and leads a boring and loveless life with his wife Carol (Laura San Giacomo) and their daughter. To alleviate his boredom Thomas joins an online poker group where he meets “Talhotblond”, an 18 year-old named Katie. He decides to create a younger, cooler version of himself and calls himself “Marinesniper” and says his name is Tommy. Soon enough “Tommy” and Katie begin an online affair. Life becomes complicated for Thomas, trying to keep up with his lies at home and the lies he is telling Katie. The affair becomes an obsession that leads to all night chatting and cybersex sessions between the two. When his wife finds out about the affair, Thomas realizes he must end things with Katie but wants to remain friends. She agrees, but then begins to pursue his real life friend Brian who she finds on his on-line friend list. She begins flaunting their relationship to Thomas to make him jealous and continues to string Thomas along in the drama. Thomas finally snaps, the jealousy becomes too much for him and he murders his friend who is completely unaware that Thomas and Katie even knew each other. After the murder, Thomas takes his family on a camping trip. All the while the police are unraveling his story, the lies, deception and murder for a lover that he had never even met.
