Watch Beware of Pity

Based on a novel by Stefan Zweig, this complex film showcases powerful performances. It recounts the main drama as a flashback during a conversation between two soldiers during the first World War. Several years before the conflict, a military officer (depicted by Albert Lieven) causally invites a baroness (played by Lili Palmer) to dance with him at a party. He discovers soon afterwards that cannot walk because of an accident. The two begin talking, and soon a relationship develops. Yet as their romance deepens, the man begins questioning his own motives. The plot places their love under a psychological microscope.
