Billy the Kid Returns is a 1938 American Western film directed by Joseph Kane and starring Roy Rogers, Smiley Burnette, and Lynne Roberts. The movie is a sequel to 1936's The Days of Jesse James, following the adventures of cowboy hero Billy the Kid. The film begins with Billy the Kid (Roy Rogers) being mistakenly identified as a bandit and arrested by the newly appointed sheriff, Gabby Whittaker (Smiley Burnette). However, after realizing their mistake, Gabby and his sidekick, Frog (Morgan Wallace), team up with Billy in order to stop a group of outlaws who are trying to take over the town. The outlaws are being led by a former friend of Billy's named Jim Sherwood (Wade Boteler), who was recently released from prison and is seeking revenge against those who put him there. Along with his gang of henchmen, Sherwood plans to rob the town bank and take control of the land. Billy and Gabby work together to try and stop Sherwood, but they face several obstacles along the way. They also encounter a love interest, Anne (Lynne Roberts), the daughter of the wealthy landowner who owns the bank. The action in the movie is fast-paced and adventurous, with plenty of gun fights, horseback chases, and daring stunts. Roy Rogers, who was a popular singing cowboy at the time, also performs several musical numbers throughout the film. One of the standout elements of the movie is the humor provided by Smiley Burnette's character, Gabby. Gabby is a bumbling and comedic character who often gets into silly situations, but ultimately proves himself to be a loyal and brave sidekick to Billy. Overall, Billy the Kid Returns is an entertaining Western film that showcases the talents of Roy Rogers and the comedic skills of Smiley Burnette. The movie is a classic example of the Hollywood Western genre, with a hero who fights for justice and a group of outlaws who must be stopped. Fans of Westerns and classic Hollywood films will enjoy this action-packed adventure.
