This film noir thriller stars William Hurt and Kathleen Turner as lovers whose extramarital affair becomes deadly. Ned Racine (William Hurt) meets beautiful Matty Walker (Kathleen Turner) on a sultry Florida night, and the two become lovers. Ned, a second-class lawyer, soon finds out that Matty is married to a wealthy, older businessman, Edmund Walker (Richard Crenna), who she no longer loves beyond the extravagant lifestyle he provides. In spite of the advice of his best friend, Peter Lowenstein (Ted Danson), Ned continues the affair and becomes increasingly obsessed with Matty, who explains that she would leave Edmund for Ned but her prenuptial agreement would leave her with nothing. The two lovers then decide the only solution is to kill her husband. Ned visits his arsonist client, Teddy Lewis (Mickey Rourke), for advice. Teddy tries to talk Ned out of it, as he does not think the lawyer has the criminal mind to think of all the angles. Once Ned makes it clear he will go through with it, Teddy explains how to use an incendiary device to cover the crime. Late one night, Ned kills Edmund and takes his body to an abandoned building, which he then burns down. At first, Ned and Matty do not contact one another, but Edmund’s attorney, Miles Hardin (Michael M. Ryan), contacts him about Edmund’s latest will that Ned supposedly prepared. Instead, Matty forged a new will with Ned’s signature, that is legally void, which results in the entire fortune being left to her. Edmund’s sister, Roz (Lanna Saunders), questions the validity of the will and the police inform Ned of some suspicious details about the death, including Ned’s shaky alibi. Ned begins to piece together that Matty may have set him up for her husband’s murder and goes to the Walker estate to confront her. He sees a firebomb wired to the boathouse where they planned to meet, and dares her to enter the building. She does and the building explodes, but Ned does not believe she actually died. He is arrested, and from prison is able to trace the real web of deceit that Matty Walker created in order to inherit her husband’s money.
