Harry Belafonte, Dorothy Dandridge, Pearl Bailey and a terrific African American cast helped re-create Georges Bizet's 1820s opera "Carmen" in the southern United States around World War II. In "Carmen Jones" the gullible Spanish soldier Don Jose from the original story became a GI - appropriately named Joe. Bullfighter Escamillo is a boxer named Husky Miller; seductive cigarette factory worker Carmen became, in Dandridge's interpretation, the super-seductive parachute factory worker Carmen Jones. The voices of real opera singers were dubbed in, even though Dandridge and Belafonte were singers. The film is a little dated now, but still campy good fun.
