Carrie is a 1952 drama starring Jennifer Jones and Laurence Olivier. It is based on a novel by Theodor Dreiser. Film critics criticized the movie for sanitizing Dreiser’s original story. William Wyler directed the movie and he was worried that the original story may be too depressing in the movie going audience. Jones was not Wyler’s first choice for the lead role, and film critics panned her for a weak performance. The plot centers on a woman named Carrie Meeber who moves to Chicago. She meets a man named Charles Drouet (Eddie Albert) on the train. She moves in with him and pressures him to marry her. She finds out, however, that he is already married. She becomes pregnant and the couple struggle with poverty.
