Debdas is a Bengali movie released in 2002, directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta and starring Prasenjit Chatterjee, Tapas Pal, and Arpita Chatterjee in leading roles. The movie is based on the 1917 Bengali novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay with the same name. Debdas is a tragic story of a young man named Devdas Mukherjee, played by Prasenjit Chatterjee, and two women, Parvati or Paro, played by Arpita Chatterjee, and Chandramukhi, played by Shamata Anchan, who love him intensely throughout his life.

The movie tells the story of Devdas, a wealthy and pampered young man from a prominent family in rural Bengal in the early 1900s. Paro, who is his childhood friend, lives in a neighboring house and belongs to a lower social class. Despite their social differences, the two fall in love with each other and plan their future together. However, Devdas's father disapproves of their relationship, and when Paro's mother approaches Devdas's mother with a marriage proposal, they refuse. Devdas, who is deeply hurt by this rejection, leaves home to go to Kolkata, where he indulges in drinking, gambling, and other vices to numb his pain.

In the city, Devdas meets Chandramukhi, a courtesan, who falls in love with him, and Devdas soon develops a deep friendship with her. Chandramukhi gives him the love and care that he had missed all along and helps him cope with his pain. Devdas, on the other hand, remains conflicted between his love for Paro and his friendship with Chandramukhi. He tries to numb his pain with alcohol and often behaves rudely with Chandramukhi.

The movie portrays the complexities of love and relationships, depicts the plight of women in a patriarchal society, and shows how societal norms and class differences can destroy the lives of individuals. As the story progresses, we see Devdas's life spiraling out of control as he becomes addicted to alcohol and loses all hope. Paro, who remains in love with him all along, tries to reach out to him through letters and messages, but Devdas rejects her advances, consumed by his pain and anger.

The movie has a melancholic tone and is shot in beautiful locations. The music and background score are impressive, adding to the emotions of the movie. The performances of the lead actors are exceptional, with Prasenjit Chatterjee delivering a remarkable performance as Devdas, showcasing his journey from a pampered young man to an alcoholic recluse. Tapas Pal and Arpita Chatterjee have portrayed their characters with finesse and authenticity, bringing depth to the story.

Overall, Debdas is a poignant and tragic love story that unfolds over a period of fifteen years, showcasing the complexities of human emotions, the harsh realities of society, and the power of love. It is a must-watch for people who enjoy tragic love stories and appreciate Bengali cinema.
