Deep Water is a psychological thriller film that was released in 1981, directed by Michel Deville. The French-language film stars Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, and Sandrine Kljajic. The movie tells the story of two couples who are living in a small French village. Vic (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Melinda (Sandrine Kljajic) are married, but their relationship is strained. Vic is a successful businessman who is unable to connect with his wife, who is a photographer. Meanwhile, Vic's best friend, Claire (Isabelle Huppert), is in a loveless marriage to Gilles (Christian Benedetti). Vic and Claire are both drawn to each other, but they never act on their feelings.

The central theme of the movie is the gap between desire and reality. Each of the main characters is struggling to reconcile their individual desires with the realities of their relationships. Vic wants to be with Claire, but he loves his wife. Claire wants to be loved, but she is trapped in an unhappy marriage. Melinda wants her husband to pay attention to her, but she is unable to articulate her needs. Gilles feels threatened by Vic and Claire's relationship, but he is too weak to confront them.

Michel Deville portrays the characters' desires through the use of visual imagery. For example, Melinda takes photographs of herself in erotic poses, as if trying to reclaim her own desire. Vic and Claire are repeatedly shown standing at the edge of the lake, looking out into the water, a metaphor for their unfulfilled desires. Gilles, on the other hand, is shown trapped in his office, unable to escape the boredom of his life.

The cinematography of the movie is strikingly beautiful. The French countryside is shot with a painterly eye, capturing the changing seasons and the shifting moods of the characters. The score is haunting, emphasizing the dreamlike quality of the film.

The acting in the movie is superb. Isabelle Huppert is particularly remarkable as Claire, a woman who is both vulnerable and manipulative. Jean-Louis Trintignant is also excellent as Vic, a man who is unable to break free from his own desires. Sandrine Kljajic brings a sense of fragility to Melinda, a woman who is desperate for affection.

Overall, Deep Water is a haunting and powerful movie that explores the complexities of desire and human relationships. It is a film that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.
