Dorfman in Love stars Sara Rue as the endearingly romance-deprived lead, Deb Dorfman, in a romantic comedy about one woman’s quest for love. Deb is sweetly self-deprecating and nurturing, the linchpin of her family. She works as an account in her self-centered, philandering, tightwad of a brother’s (Jonathan Chase) company and assumes responsibility for her elderly, cranky, widowed father (Elliott Gould). Deb is the girl who holds everything together for everyone -- except for herself. A romantic at heart -- no, in every fiber of her being -- and an enthusiastic patron of audio love stories, Deb is ruefully solo in the romance department. Then one day Jay (Johann Urb), the handsome object of her desire and star of her one-sided crush, invites her to cat-sit in his loft for a week while he’s away working as a foreign correspondent in the Middle East. A gorgeous man with an exciting career asks her to take on chores for him. A fashionable L.A. downtown loft is to be lived in. A cat nurtured. Deb, of course, says yes. While taking care of the loft, Deb meets her sexy neighbor, a man who is just as sweet as his unlikely moniker of Cookie (Haaz Sleiman). Cookie instigates a beauty make-over for Deb, which is the equivalent of the changeling ritual in traditional stories. Going from wallflower to wow, Deb begins to explore new facets of both her interior and exterior journey. The glamorous back-drop of L.A. is a metaphor and a contrast to the everyday reality of Deb’s Valley background, illuminating the different terrains that Deb inhabits. The horizons of Los Angels also open up. L.A. is beautifully captured in cinematography becoming a driving character in its own right. Dorfman in Love is a movie that explores the life of a cute, smart, nice woman on the edge of moving beyond the limitations of her boring, limited, and lonely life and moving towards the goal of finding happiness, completeness, and connection. She ends up successfully falling in love with a man and most importantly, she is now living out the life she has dreamed of in her boring office job account job, when her only source of comfort was listening to romance bodice-ripper romance novels on audio cassette. The film ends with Dorfman living life like the heroine of the books she loves!
